What a start to the 40th anniversary of the Games!

Competitors wasted no time getting into the action, with the half marathon kicking things off bright and early at Simpsons Gap. Badminton, darts, lawn bowls, orienteering, clay target and pistol shooting, swimming and tenpin bowling also featured on a busy opening day across Alice Springs.

A big congratulations to Central Coast runner Andrew Hogg, who claimed overall honours in the Half Marathon and took home the first medal of the 2026 Games!

As the sun went down, the celebrations ramped up at ANZAC Oval, where competitors proudly led the way into the official Opening Ceremony.

Stuart Joel Nuggett, Choirboys, Baby Animals and DJ Niko brought the music, the crowd brought the energy, and together they made it a night to remember!

From old friends reuniting to first-time competitors soaking up the atmosphere, it was a fitting start to eight days of good sport, great stories and plenty of friendly competition in the Red Centre.
