What a weekend! The 2026 Alice Springs Masters Games got off to a fantastic start, with two days of sporting action, medal-winning moments and a huge Opening Ceremony celebrating 40 years of Australia's original Friendly Games.
Saturday's competition kicked off bright and early with the Half Marathon at Simpsons Gap, where Central Coast runner Andrew Hogg claimed overall honours and the first medal of the Games. Alice Springs local Lydia Birch led the women home, enjoying the spectacular Red Centre scenery and sunrise along the way.
Across town, competitors took to the courts, pools and playing fields for badminton, darts, lawn bowls, orienteering, clay target and pistol shooting, swimming and tenpin bowling, with plenty of personal bests, sporting achievements and friendly competition to celebrate.
As the sun went down, the celebrations ramped up at ANZAC Oval, where competitors proudly marched into the official Opening Ceremony. Stuart Joel Nuggett, Choirboys, Baby Animals and DJ Niko brought the music, the crowd brought the energy, and together they made it a night to remember!
Sunday brought another big day of competition, with athletics, cycling, mountain biking and netball among the sports on the program. From the determination of competitors to the encouragement from the sidelines, the Friendly Games spirit was on full display.
But in true Territory fashion, Mother Nature decided to join the action! Rain and lightning rolled through Alice Springs on Sunday, adding an unexpected twist to the weekend's proceedings.
While the weather may have interrupted some plans, it certainly hasn't dampened the enthusiasm of our competitors, volunteers and supporters. After all, a little rain isn't going to stop the Friendly Games!
With the opening weekend behind us and plenty more sporting action, celebrations and memorable moments still to come, one thing is certain — the 40th anniversary Games are already delivering plenty of good sport and great stories.
Bring on the rest of the week!
