The 2026 Alice Springs Masters Games have certainly had their share of challenges, with severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and damaging winds sweeping through the Red Centre. Our thoughts are with members of the Alice Springs community who have been affected by the storms, particularly those dealing with damage to their homes and properties.
The weather has disrupted sporting schedules and brought some competitions to an early finish, while a power outage forced the temporary closure of the Games Centre. It's been a busy few days for our organisers, Sport Coordinators and volunteers, who have been working hard behind the scenes to keep everyone informed and safe.
But amid the challenges, there's still been plenty to celebrate.
Across the sporting venues, competitors have been giving it their all whenever conditions have allowed. From the softball diamond to the courts, fields and tracks, medals have been won, personal bests achieved and plenty of memorable moments shared.
And while the competition is an important part of the Games, it's the friendships, encouragement and camaraderie that make this event truly special.
We've seen that Friendly Games spirit in the patience, understanding and flexibility shown by competitors, supporters and volunteers as schedules have changed and plans have been adjusted.
To everyone who has taken these changes in their stride, thank you. Your support and good humour mean a great deal to the teams working hard to deliver the Games.
With further unsettled weather possible, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant, follow our social media channels for the latest updates and stay in touch with their Sport Coordinators regarding any changes to competition schedules. The safety and wellbeing of everyone involved will always be our priority.
As we celebrate 40 years of the Alice Springs Masters Games, these past few days have been a timely reminder that the Friendly Games are about so much more than sporting achievements.
It's about community, connection and looking out for one another. And that's something worth celebrating.
